Rich Roll Wiki
Early Life
Rich Roll was born on October 20, 1966. As a kid, he was often bullied but it did not stop him from working hard and excel both in swimming and in school.
Education
Right after high school, Rich Roll became a butterfly swimmer for Standard University’s swim team and soon received his bachelor’s degree from the same university. Later, he earned a degree in law from Cornell Law School.
Career and Struggles
While in Cornell Law School, Rich Roll started to be a drug-addict and alcoholic. Because of this, he was alienated from his friends and family and often landed in jail. His alcoholism was so serious that he would start the day with vodka and would even smuggle alcohol to work. As a result, he found himself alone, in danger of losing his job, and on the verge of becoming homeless. By the time he was 31, he decided that it was time to stop so he entered rehab.
After his treatment, he was able to work 80 hours per week at his law firm and did well financially. Then, he met his wife and started a family. Despite this great improvement in his life, he was still eating fast food, not working out, and grossly overweight. Climbing a few steps of stairs would make him so breathless, he felt as if his heart would burst out off his chest. This made him stop and re-evaluate his life. At 39 years old he radically changed his lifestyle. It is a now or never decision, not doing it might even cost him his life. It was a trial and error form of dieting. Finally, he found the most suitable diet, that is Veganism. Veganism is a plant based diet that is the most humane way of living which try to exclude all forms of exploitation and or cruelty to animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. Slowly he noticed a change in his person, he felt better and energized. This leads him to start training and eventually compete in endurance races. He is so invigorated that he feels he can do anything.
With new vigor, Rich Roll became confident and competitive. He wants to conquer the world by becoming the best athlete he can be. He faithfully stayed a vegan. His first competition was a clear demonstration of the prowess of a vegan. Ultraman is a three- day, 515 km multisport race. He was the first vegan to compete in the 320-mile uber-endurance event where he finished in the top ten males despite being a newbie. He successfully competed in international events which clearly debunks the unfortunate belief of some people that being a vegan does not equip you with the necessary stamina to do strenuous activities.
As an ultra endurance athlete, Rich Roll received many accolades such as one of the “25 Fittest Men in the World” by many sports and lifestyle magazines. He published his memoir “Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World’s Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself” which was a truly inspirational book as evidenced by it being a number one bestseller. Unexpectedly, he followed this up with a self-entitled podcast show which captured a spot on the iTunes top-10 lists. Finally, to showcase the benefits of veganism, Rich Roll and his wife Julie Piatt co-authored two books titled “The Plantpower Way: Whole Food Plant-Based Recipes” and “Guidance for The Whole Family” which became number one bestsellers.
Rich’s journey to becoming a motivational speaker, an advocate of plant-based diets and being a boundary-pushing athlete, and a best selling author have been featured on CNN and other major publications such as The New York Times and Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine.
